Why fry tofu?

A deep fryer allows you to "fry" food with little or no oil.

It works by circulating hot air around the food to cook it, rather than submerging it in hot oil like frying does.

Of course, the food isn't actually "fried" since it's not being dipped in oil, but it achieves the crispiness we know and love from stir-fries.

It also allows you to prepare foods that you would normally bake in the oven, such asBroccoliorasparagus, use less oil and don't have to turn on the oven.

Ingredients needed for Fried Crispy Tofu

  • extra harter Tofu- Of the different types of tofu, I find that extra firm tofu holds up best in the fryer. I recommend using an organic variety. Some of my favorite brands are Nasoya, 365 Everyday Value, Earth Grown and Greenwise.
  • oil- Because this recipe is prepared in the Airfryer, you only need 1 tablespoon of oil for this dish, which is far less compared to the amount needed when using a deep fryer, wok or shallow fry in a pan. You can substitute avocado oil if you prefer.
  • cornstarch- I prefer to use a non-GMO brand.
  • Fine sea salt or kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper -You can use white pepper if you prefer.

How to make this Salt and Pepper Tofu recipe in the Airfryer

First, open the tofu wrapper and carefully remove the block, allowing excess liquid to drip off.

If you have a tofu press, you can use it to press the tofu block by following the instructions that came with the press.

This is tofu pressI have. I am very happy with this and how quickly and easily it removes water from the tofu.

If you use a tofu press, you only need to press the tofu for this dish for 15 minutes.

Of course you can also press your tofu without a special press using the heavy kitchen towel/pot method.

Place the block of tofu in the center of a clean, absorbent kitchen towel on a sturdy plate on a flat surface.

Wrap the tofu with the towel.

Put a heavy object like a big pot or some books on it to push the tofu down.

This method requires you to press the tofu a little longer for this recipe, about 20 minutes.

Prepare tofu

In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch, salt, and pepper and set aside.

Cut the tofu into 1 inch cubes.

Place the tofu pieces in a bowl.

Add olive oil to the tofu.

Use a silicone spatula or your hands to coat the tofu with the oil.

Add cornstarch mixture.

Preheat the air fryer

If you useNinja-fryerMake sure you put in the sharpest shell first.

Other brands may have a similarly crispier top/shell, while others don't.

Lightly coat the bottom of the crisper bowl or Airfryer basket with olive oil or a non-aerosol, non-propellant olive oil spray.

The fryer must be preheated to 390°F for 3 minutes before cooking the tofu.

After preheating, add the coated tofu cubes to the air fryer basket in a single layer.

Roast the tofu at 390°F for 15 minutes, shaking the basket 3-5 times during cooking.

  • 14 ounces extra firm organic tofu block, excess water drained
  • 1 soup spoon oil (plus more for greasing the Airfryer)
  • 2 soup spoon Non-GMO Corn Starch
  • ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt or kosher salt
  • ½-3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (use white pepper instead if you prefer)

  • Press the tofu with a tofu press or the kitchen towel/heavy object method. See notes below for pressing instructions without a tofu press. Depending on the method used, the tofu needs to be pressed for 15 to 25 minutes.

  • In a small bowl, combine cornstarch, salt, and pepper (use ½-3/4 teaspoon pepper to taste) and set aside.
