20 years ago (which I think is a long time ago) supermotos were all the rage. In a market dominated bySuperbikes, they were the “next big thing”.

Although they gained a cult following, they never reached the mainstream. The problem is that while they're a lot of fun, they're also very impractical.

They have stupidly tight seats and tight, precise throttle responses that will take you from good power to knockout in a quarter turn. Then there's the torquey but buzzing motor, the lack of a windshield, the inability to carry anything, and the tank's woefully short range of around 80 miles.

Keep in mind that 80 miles is probably more than you want to do at one time. Supermotos are the ultimate '1 hour blast' bikes and that's probably why they've never disrupted the Superbike sales charts. Bikes are mostly recreational items these days, but a supermoto is a toy.

That means they're about as much fun as you can get on two wheels. Every time I've ridden a Supermoto I've laughed in my helmet or wide-eyed and grabbed the bike like a monkey on a wet rock!

The best supermoto bike for you

Riding a Supermoto can be a bit trickier if you are a shorter rider as they have high seats as standard. Don't be fooled by the mid-range engine power of most supermotos. These are sharp, unforgiving bikes for experienced riders. Some will lift off in 3rd gear, and generally you don't need to drive them hard; Instead, you must learn to tame them.

Remember that the easiest way to tell if a bike is right for you or not is to try it. So visit your local dealer, get on the bike and see which bike is best for your height and riding style.

Some may argue that a 125cc bike cannot be a "proper" supermoto because it lacks the torque that is at the heart of an SM. However, here at BikerRated we believe that a 125 can justify being called a Supermotard – they are light, have the right seating position and when you fit them with grippy tires they become a great b-road blaster.

The most reliable supermotos

All modern supermotos are as reliable as other similar bikes in their range. While both KTM and Husqvarna have some reliability issues, their superbikes are no different than other bikes in those manufacturers' lines.

One of the most reliable SMs on our list is Ducati’s Hypermotard 1100. It has a twin engine rather than a single one, and its large displacement coupled with long service intervals means it's as reliable as a superbike can be.
