There are countless options for moisturizing products on the market to keep the skin on your face and body well hydrated. But only a small portion of it is considered gluten-free. All nine brands listed here make gluten-free moisturizers.
where to look
Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin unless you have open lesions from dermatitis herpetiformis, a skin condition that can occur with celiac disease. The best way to tell if ingredients containing gluten were used to make a product is to read the label, which will say "gluten-free" if the product has been tested and found gluten-free.
There is a chance of picking up trace amounts of gluten from a lotion containing gluten if you use it on skin near your mouth or accidentally touch your mouth after wetting your hands with a lotion containing gluten.
All skin care products marked as "gluten-free" do not contain certain ingredients such as e.gwheat germ oiland hydrolyzed wheat protein derived from gluten grains. Your options include gluten-free facial moisturizers (for use around the lips where you risk ingesting them) and gluten-free moisturizers withSPF protection(important if you aretrain outside).
As with other products, such as makeup andlipstick, many of the larger cosmetic companies are less likely to offer gluten-free moisturizers. In general, smaller companies and natural and organic brands will be more likely to cater to the gluten-free community.

This earth and animal friendly company makes skin and face products with ingredients like green tea, aloe and jasmine. However, it does not guarantee that its products are gluten-free.

We encourage consumers to have their say.” See Contact your healthcare provider if you have specific sensitivity concerns.

Some products may contain ingredients containing gluten.
Some Burt's Bees products are known to contain allergens, while others may have been manufactured on a shared line with products containing gluten or in a facility that also processes products containing ingredients containing gluten.according to their website. Therefore, you should refrain from Burt's Bees products if you are particularly sensitive to traces of gluten.
why
CeraVe, part of the L'Oréal group, is widely available and makes around two dozen moisturizing face and body creams, as well as many other skin care products. Developed by dermatologists, the brand includes many products for people with specific chronic skin and health problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
According to a company customer service representative, CeraVe products may contain traces of gluten. But most ingredients derived from grain sources containing gluten are highly refined and contain no traces of gluten protein. The company has also set strict limits on the levels of potentially allergenic gluten proteins in its products.
Because many people with celiac disease or non-celiac sensitivities can experience a reaction to small amounts of gluten, CeraVe recommends discussing the ingredients on the product label with your healthcare professional. If you're particularly sensitive to small amounts of gluten, talk to your doctor before using CeraVe skin care products, or consider another option on this list.
Where DermaSeries
Dove, an established personal care brand, makes facial lotions and moisturizers for sensitive skin and chronic skin conditions under its DermaSeries line. However, according to a customer service rep, Dove is following the guidelines of theInternational Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). Therefore, if a product uses ingredients derived from gluten grains, this will be stated on the label. Dove recommends that you consult your doctor about the products before using them.
And
Jāsön, a subsidiary of Hain Celestial, used to offer a range of certified gluten-free products, including skin moisturizers. However, these certified gluten-free products have been discontinued. San Ive
St Ives, which manufactures a wide range of skin care products, is a Unilever subsidiary. The company does not test for gluten, but lists ingredients according to the guidelines of the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients.

Olay
From cleansers to moisturizers, Olay offers dozens of products. However, the company (which is owned by Procter & Gamble) does not provide a gluten-free list.
According to a customer service rep, "If we add gluten, wheat or wheat extract directly to a product, it will appear in the ingredients list on the label. However, we cannot 100% guarantee that there are no traces of gluten. Many of the ingredients used in our products are purchased as raw materials and we have no information on the composition of these raw materials or whether they have been in contact with other materials before they reach the factory.”
Vaseline
Many people swear by the Vaseline Intensive Care and Vaseline Clinical Care products. Vaseline offers solutions for very dry skin, cracked heels, dark spots and eczema.
Like St. Ives and Dove, Vaseline is a Unilever company and will list gluten-containing ingredients on their labels with their scientific names (Triticum, Hordeum and Secale). Note that gluten cross-contamination can occur in petroleum jelly products, even when no gluten-specific ingredients are present.
A word from Verywell
Choosing a moisturizer (including a gluten-free moisturizer) is really a matter of preference. Some people prefer light lotions that seem to sink right into the skin, while others enjoy the feel of thicker creams on the skin.
In general, moisturizers tend to contain more water than creams, which are thicker, while serums, gels, and ointments are oil-based. Ultimately it depends on your skin type and what works best for you in terms of protection and hydration. If you feel your moisturizer isn't enough, you can try a different product.
However, pay attention to how your body reacts when you try a new product. If your skin is irritated by a new moisturizer, stop using it immediately and try something else.
